Why Do You Get Forehead Wrinkles?

Yes, we all get forehead wrinkles but why? First, let’s take a look at the answer we already know: aging. There are two proteins in your skin that are especially affected by the aging process; collagen and elastin.
Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in our bodies, mostly found in places such as the skin and ligaments. This is because collagen promotes strength and - in skin - thickness and firmness. Elastin, on the other hand, is what helps your skin stretch without getting deformed or permanently stuck that way.
When you’re older, these proteins don’t develop as much in the body. When we lose collagen, our skin isn’t as strong so it begins to sag with gravity. Without the elastin as well, though, your skin won’t snap back from the sagging like it used to.
These aren’t the only culprits of your wrinkles, though. In addition to the lack of these proteins, blood vessels tend to shrink as we age. While this isn’t dangerous, it does keep oxygen and nutrients from reaching the skin at the rate that it used to. Without these, the skin has even less of a defense against gravity.
The Sun and UV Rays
You may have also heard that sun exposure can cause wrinkles and it’s true. Remember the collagen that you lose as you age? Well, you can lose it faster when you are exposed to a lot of sunlight. The sun is one of the main reasons why you see a lot of younger adults with wrinkles, age spots, or even worse health concerns.
Of course, you can’t just avoid the sun forever but there is something you can do: protect your skin. We will go into further detail on how to prevent your skin from aging early later but as far as the sun goes; step one is to wear your sunscreen and reapply as needed.
“Free radicals” is a term that most of us have heard but we usually don’t know exactly what it means. However, to explain exactly what free radicals are and how they affect your skin would take much more chemistry than is easy to digest.
To grossly oversimplify, though, free radicals are molecules that are incredibly unstable. As a result, they damage the other cells in your body. Even though they don’t kill these cells but rather damage them, this damage is still enough to render them useless.
Some of these are formed in your body naturally. Usually, these free radicals form in your immune system to help fight off viruses or bacteria. However, too many of these free radicals in your system isn’t good.
Extra free radicals are caused by factors outside of your body that causes your body to take in more free radicals in addition to what it produces naturally. This can be caused by anything from UV radiation to smoking to pollution. These, running free in the body unchecked, will damage cells without control, meaning even your body’s good cells aren’t safe from them.
This all sounds scary and it does affect the body in different ways. However, let’s focus on how it affects your face and causes wrinkles. The scientific word for the damage it does to your face is oxidative damage which - put more simply - just means that it ages you prematurely.
This premature aging is caused by, once again, the destruction of collagen and elastin. Since your body doesn’t naturally make free radicals in this part of your body, the introduction of them is especially taxing.
We briefly mentioned earlier that smoking can cause you to develop wrinkles when you are younger. However, saying this is because of free radicals is a bit of an oversimplification of how smoking affects your skin.
First, let’s take a look at what smoking does to your skin from the outside. It is important to note that for this specific purpose, secondhand smoke will do the trick too, so be careful!
Think about when someone exhales after a drag off a cigarette. The smoke they release tends to hit their face and the face of those around them. Now think about all the chemicals and carcinogens that are in a cigarette. All of those are running over your skin and are bound to have some sort of negative affect.
However, this isn’t the only part of smoking that affects your skin and makes it wrinkle. Inhaling smoke doesn’t do wonders for your complexion either! When you breathe in this smoke - filled with chemicals to add to the problem - your body can’t circulate oxygen as well. Your body needs this oxygen for many different things and only one of which is to heal your skin cells and form new ones.
Repetitive Facial Expression
Remember when you were young and your mom warned you, “stop making that face it’ll get stuck that way!”? Well, it may not get stuck but you might see signs of facial expressions lingering after a time. When you make these faces everyday, multiple times for your entire life, your skin starts to show this.
Just think about it; how many times do you make a face that moves your forehead? Eventually, as your skin loses its collagen and elastin and doesn’t snap back as well, deep wrinkles begin to form in the places that are affected most by our day to day expressions.
What Types of Wrinkles Are There?
Much like there are different types of scars, there are different types of wrinkles. Specifically, there are four different types of scars; atrophic wrinkles and rhytids, permanent elastic creases, gravitational folds, and dynamic expression lines. It is important to know the difference because different treatments may not work for all types of scars.
Atrophic Crinkles and Rhytids
These wrinkles are rather fine lines, like those wrinkles that appear between your eyebrows as you squint. Wrinkles such as this can appear on your face or other parts of your body.
If you straighten out a part of your body, pulling the skin tight again, these wrinkles may go away. However, if they don’t go away, this could be a sign of the elasticity in your skin starting to fade. Sun damage can also increase your risk for getting these types of wrinkles when you're young.
Permanent Elastic Creases
There are some wrinkles that you have even when you are young. However, you may not notice them until they get deeper and permanent. This usually occurs on your cheeks, upper lip, and the base of your neck.
Once again, we can thank age and - most often - the sun for these wrinkles forming even when we’re young. However, they can’t be blamed all on their own. Smoking is also the culprit for these. For the same reasons that we discussed earlier, you are more likely to see smokers get these wrinkles earlier in life.
By name alone you can probably guess that main culprit for these wrinkles - gravity. Of course, though, it once again brings up elastin and collagen. If these proteins are forming freely in your skin, it won’t droop or sag. However, as we age, gravity isn’t so kind to us.
When this type of wrinkling occurs, it mainly affects the thinner parts of the skin such as your eyes, brow, and cheeks. Think about how as you age, your cheeks seem to sag; this is an example of a gravitational fold.
If you have a leaner, thinner face, you are more prone to getting gravitational folds since, as we mentioned, they affect thinner skin more frequently. However, if your face is plumper as well as well hydrated, then you may not have to worry about these types of wrinkles so much.
Dynamic Expression Lines
These lines are nearly unavoidable and are caused by repeated and frequent facial movements. Every time you have smiled when you saw someone, laughed at a joke, or cried at a movie, these lines began to form.
Most people would say you should wear these wrinkles with a sense of pride. After all, don’t laugh lines and crow’s feet when you smile symbolize a life well lived? These wrinkles are a map of your life! However, sometimes we would still rather they weren’t so apparent and that’s okay too.
Dynamic Wrinkles vs. Static Wrinkles
In the above sections, we have discussed four different types of wrinkles. However, these can be categorized as either static wrinkles or dynamic wrinkles. The first three types of wrinkles we went through - gravitational folds, permanent elastic creases, and atrophic crinkles and rhytids - are all static wrinkles while dynamic expression lines - of course -are dynamic expression lines.
Static wrinkles appear naturally. As your skin loses collagen and elastin, your face simply doesn’t keep its shape as well. Dynamic wrinkles, on the other hand, appear when a facial expression is made and usually disappear as we change expressions.
Both these types of wrinkles form on our forehead eventually. However, they can be treated. We just have to make sure to use treatments that will target all of these type of wrinkles rather than just one.
Why Does Your Forehead Wrinkle So Easily?
The forehead is usually the very first area to get wrinkles on your face because it is different from the rest of your skin in regards to its makeup and the obstacles it faces on a day to day basis.
First, let’s take a look at the makeup of your forehead. Your cheeks, eyes, around your mouth, etc. all have fat underneath the skin. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for your forehead. Fat is important with consideration to wrinkles because it offers extra support and shape to the skin. Without it, however, your skin is more likely and easier to fold and wrinkle.
Now, consider how often your forehead moves. Every time you look confused, angry, happy, or sad that expression reaches your forehead. This makes your forehead extremely susceptible to dynamic expression lines that eventually remain static.
On an environmental note, take a look at how often your forehead is hit by the sun. We even have the expression “by the sweat of your brow” to prove it! This, as we explained before, causes wrinkles to show earlier on the face.
How Can You Prevent Forehead Wrinkles?
Of course, there are some forehead wrinkles that can’t be avoided. After all, you can’t expect to never make a facial expression and never see the sun. However, there are some steps you can take to try and combat the early formation of wrinkles on your forehead.
· Protect your skin. We have already gone over the number of ways that UV rays are harmful to your skin, so make sure it’s protected. You should make sure to use a sunscreen or moisturizer with at an SPF of 20 at the least. If you put this on 15 minutes before you go outside, it will have proper time to absorb into and begin to protect your skin. However, it does need to be reapplied every 1-2 hours and be thorough in covering your whole face and neck!
· Staying healthy is another good tip for keeping wrinkles at bay. This means to drink enough water, get enough sleep, and eat right. Eating a diet full of vitamins and antioxidants is a fantastic way to keep wrinkles at bay. In 2007, a study found that a high intake of vitamin C was especially helpful to women trying not to age early. Vitamin A (retinol) has also been shown to help wrinkle prevention.
· Stop smoking. We aren’t going to get too preachy here but as we discussed, smoking damages the skin in more ways than one. If you are interested in keeping your youth for as long as possible, try to keep smoking out or - at least - to a minimum.
· Get your eyes checked. This one may sound unrelated but hold on. When you have poor vision or you can’t see, the first reaction is to squint. However, this repetitive motion can leave you with creases on your forehead and between your eyes.
· Moisturize. We can’t stress enough how important it is for you to keep your skin healthy and hydrated. This is done by external moisturizers, yes, but make sure you’re drinking plenty of water as well.
· Start Taking Care of Your Skin Young. Most manufacturers of anti-wrinkle creams recommend that you add them into your routine rather young. This isn’t just a ploy to get more people to buy their product, though. Rather, it is pretty wise advice. It is much easier to work to prevent any sort of skin problem than to start treatment after the problem already exists.
What Are Your Options on How to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles?
Luckily, there are many different options for you to chose from when it comes to treating your wrinkles. If you want to treat them at home, you have options to buy and DIY options but if your wrinkles just won’t go away you can always get them taken care of medically.
Below we will discuss some of the best options in the treatment options for you no matter where or how you want to get rid of forehead wrinkles. We will go in depth to make sure you completely understand the risks and benefits of each treatments so you can easily find what’s best for you.
Home Remedies to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles
First, let’s take a look at the home remedies that you can make yourself. Not only are these made with natural ingredients but with a DIY choice, you will know exactly what is going into your wrinkle cream. Not to mention, retail wrinkle creams and medical treatments can run up quite a bill that the ingredients in your cabinet won’t.
A Sweet Tonic Forehead Mask
The first DIY solution on our list is rather simple and only takes four simple ingredients: yogurt, brown sugar, aloe vera, and vitamin C. To make this one, you’re going to mix 6 tablespoons of plain yogurt, 3 tablespoons raw brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of vitamin C powder, and 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel.
You’ll need to let this mixture sit until the brown sugar dissolves but if you are pinched for time, stirring the mixture or blending it can speed this up. After it is dissolved, you can apply the mixture to your forehead where you will leave it for 20 minutes. Once your time is up, you can rinse it off with water and apply moisturizer. You can repeat this treatments once or twice a week as needed.
One of the best things about a DIY forehead treatment, as we said, is knowing what’s in it and why. So, let’s start with the yogurt. Yogurt is full of a substance known as alpha hydroxyacid AHA which is more commonly known as lactic acid. AHAs are fantastic for tightening the skin and smoothing out wrinkles.
AHAs come to the rescue once more with the brown sugar, which is a natural source of glycolic acid. Not only this, but it the granules of sugar work wonders when it comes to exfoliation.
Vitamin C, as we mentioned before, promotes the production of collagen in your skin. This, as we know, helps to keep your skin strong and healthy. Aloe vera is added simply to be a soothing moisturizer which helps more with fine lines.
Forehead Wrinkle Remover Coconut Mask
We understand that not everyone has a bottle of vitamin C in their closet, but don’t worry! This face mask uses ingredients you might be more familiar with including honey, coconut oil, powdered milk, and apple cider vinegar.
For this forehead mask recipe, you’ll need a teaspoon of honey, 2 teaspoons of coconut oil, a teaspoon of powdered milk, and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Be careful, though, apple cider vinegar can be rough on the skin if your skin is sensitive. To ease this, use an organic brand and dilute it with a teaspoon of water if you need to.
Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix them to a paste (if you find that it get’s too watery, add powdered milk until you reach the right consistency). Then, apply the mask to your face and relax for around 15 minutes. Once again, when you’re done, rinse your face with water and moisturize. Only use this once a week at most; any more than that is likely to irritate your face.
Coconut oil helps skin and hair to stay hydrated when it’s used, so it helps immensely with any fine lines caused by dehydration. The powdered milk, though, is a source of the same lactic acid found in the yogurt of the last remedy and has the same, tightening effect. Apple cider vinegar is malic acid which is another AHA and has similar effects to the milk but will also rid you of dead skin and help encourage new skin growth.
Three Ingredient Forehead Wrinkle Remover
The next forehead wrinkle mask on our list uses eggs, aloe vera, and avocado oil. While you may not have a bottle of avocado oil around your house, don’t worry, buying a bottle won’t set you back to much as you don’t need anything too fancy.
For this recipe, you’ll need one egg, a tablespoon of aloe vera, and a tablespoon of avocado oil. In addition, you will also need an extra small bowl. In the two bowls, crack the egg and separate the white from the white from the yolk. Then, add the aloe vera and avocado oil to the egg white and mix well. Apply the mask and let it dry for 20 minutes before rinsing it off. Since this mask is so gentle, you can use it every day as needed.
As we have gone over before, aloe vera is extremely hydrating. Avocado oil, on the other hand, is great for improving the elasticity of your face, helping it snap back to shape again. Finally, egg whites are great for tightening your face as well as a fantastic binder for the mask itself.
We know this one probably sounds a little ridiculous but bear with us. However, your face is like any other part of your body - exercise helps to keep it healthy. Facial exercises help to increase blood flow, which helps to keep collagen and elastin production high.
There are plenty of exercises to help you get rid of wrinkles but we will give you an example here so you can get started:
1. Make two fists
2. Place the knuckles of your first and second fingers on your forehead in the center
3. Press down and pull your fists apart, stretching your skin tight
4. Repeat 30 times every time you do this.
Retail Options to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles
There are some remedies that you can purchase but don’t have to leave the comfort of your home to have them done. You have probably seen some of the creams and serums you have to chose from on TV and in advertisements but you have far more options than just this. In this section, we will look at some of the options you have when it comes to treatments you can buy to do at home.
Serums and Creams for Wrinkles
As we said, you’ve probably seen a hundred commercials and celebrity endorsements for different serums and creams for your wrinkles. Whether it's a label on a grocery store shelf or Cindy Crawford promising it's what’s kept her young, you need to know how to tell when one of these “miracle creams” is worth your time and hard-earned money.
That cautionary advice aside, don’t lose hope. There are plenty of anti-wrinkle creams out there that really work. Better yet, there are products out there that really work that you can afford as well.
First of all, though, what’s the difference between a serum and a face cream? Well, a face cream is something you put on as a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. However, a serum usually cleans as it is applied. Because of this, most serums are far more effective than their facial cream counterparts.
Remember, if you try one of these products, though, you have to give it time. They aren’t fast acting and require repetitive use to see results. Before you give up, make sure you have been using the product regularly for at least 1 to 3 months to allow your skin time to heal and renew.
There are some ingredients that will do wonders for your skin and you should keep an eye out for them when your looking at the ingredient list on the product you want to buy. We have already gone over several of these so we will simply list them below.

Chemical Peels for Home Use
This treatment will come back again later when we talk about medical treatments for wrinkles, however, there are home choices as well. These work with the use of acidic chemicals to remove the top skin layers. Once these layers are removed, it allows younger, newer skin to surface and flourish.
However, if you aren’t careful, this treatment can go wrong very easily. This means that you need to be careful to follow all instructions when you use them. Before you commit to the treatment, though, you should do a “spot test” to make sure you won’t have an adverse reaction that could burn or hurt you.
There are several different strengths of acids that are used in this home treatment. If you want a light peel, alpha hydroxy acid or AHA (such as glycolic acid) is one option or you could use a beta hydroxy acid (such as salicylic acid). If you are looking for a mild peel, the most popular peel is trichloroacetic acid or TCA. If you are a beginner, though, we strongly recommend that you start with a low-strength, low-concentration formula and work your way up from there.
There are deep peels as well but they are mostly reserved for the medical side of chemical peels. The strongest used is a phenol peel, which is exclusively used in a medical setting. Unfortunately, this can have adverse side effects such as damage to the kidneys and problems with bleaching the skin.
Most brands or products will help you out by helping you find the strength peel that you need depending on your skin condition. In addition, almost every one of these peels (except phenol) can be found at nearly the same concentration that dermatologists use, so you don’t have to worry about muted results.
While medical chemical peels can run you thousands of dollars, you can usually buy a chemical peel for home use under $50. This affordability and effectiveness has launched home face peels to new levels of popularity.
Microdermabrasion Machines for Home Use
First off, let’s be honest; this is not the most cost effective home treatment on this list. Well, at least not at first. This is because you will have to buy a home microdermabrasion machine that will run you a couple hundred dollars. To be fair, though, this is only the cost of about one microdermabrasion treatment in a spa setting. To put that into perspective, it usually takes up to 10 treatments to really see results.
If you don’t want to make the commitment of buying one or just want to try using one out for yourself, there are options. For a small fee, there are companies that will let you rent a microdermabrasion machines. This is great for cosmetic parties but fantastic for trying it before you buy it as well.
We will go into the more technical details of microdermabrasion when we discuss it medically but to put it simply for now, your skin is blasted with microscopic crystals for a half hour or so to exfoliate the top layer of skin off. Your skin may be red and raw after this treatment but that should fade after a few hours.
Medical Treatments to Get Rid of Forehead Wrinkles
While home remedies and retail options should be the first methods of fixing forehead wrinkles, these do not always fix the problem the way we’d like. For those with stubborn wrinkles that will not respond to simpler methods, there seems to be little hope.
The advancements in medical technology, however, have allowed for treatments that can reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles. It comes at a price, though, as these treatments are more time-intensive and can be outside of the budget for many.
Also known as chemexfoliation and derma-peeling, chemical peels are a common method for wrinkle treatment. They are also used for acne and types of conditions that discolor the skin. No matter what condition you are hoping to treat, chemical peels can lead to fewer lines and wrinkles, smoother skin, and brighter complexion.
While it may seem magical to be able to simply peel away the evidence of aging, it will come at a hefty price. As chemical peels are labeled as a cosmetic treatment, insurance will not cover the cost. So, these professional peels may be a worthwhile choice, if you are willing to spend between $2, 000 and $5, 000 for the procedure.
Probably the most well-known of the treatments on the list, botox injections are a popular method for lessening the appearance of fine lines. This method utilizes a purified form of botulinum toxin A, meaning that there is no risk of developing botulism when it is administered properly.
Botox works by paralyzing the underlying muscles in the forehead, which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This is by far the most convenient of all of the options on this list. Botox appointments typically take about ten to fifteen minutes.
Despite this convenience, Botox provides only temporary results. So, you’ll have to continue to get the procedure done every few months if you hope to maintain the results.
The next treatment involves a device that blasts the skin with microscopic crystals. Each treatment takes between thirty minutes to an hour and it can take up to ten treatments for the results to show good results. During treatments, a powerful machine sprays tiny crystals onto the patient’s face, removing the layer of dead skin and polishing the face to produce a softer effect.
As multiple treatments are usually required to see results, it can take weeks to notice a difference in the appearance of wrinkles. Because microdermabrasion costs anywhere from $70 to $300 per session, it is still significantly cheaper than other treatments such as chemical peels. This can be a mitigating factor on whether to choose one treatment over the other.
Possibly the most intense of the medical treatments on this list, facial surgery should probably be the last option that you turn to. Facial surgeries for forehead wrinkles usually utilize the brow lift method. There are two types of the brow lift procedure that can be performed.
The Traditional brow lift surgery includes an incision that is made across the forehead below the hairline, after which time the skin of the forehead is lifted and repositioned. This procedure takes place under general anesthesia and takes between one and two hours.
The second type of brow lift is the Endoscopic brow lift surgery. In this method, small incisions are made across the scalp.An endoscope is then inserted in the incisions allowing the surgeon to see the treatment area on a monitor. Another instrument is used to reposition the forehead skin and brows, and the muscle tissue that caused the initial wrinkles is removed as well. Following this procedure, bandages can be removed in a day or two. Despite this, it will take several weeks or recovery time before you are fully healed.
Forehead wrinkles are frustrating and can sometimes even be a little embarrassing. However, you don’t have to be stuck with them forever. Whether you are interested in getting rid of your wrinkles at home or taken care of by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist, there is an answer for you.
